A NERC EDI Digital Sprint Project

Increasing opportunities and diversity at sea.

Our aim is to build a transparent system to advertise available berths on scientific cruises. We hope to support traditionally excluded groups to access opportunities and breakdown barriers for conducting fieldwork in marine science.

Project Overview

The opportunity to undertake ship-based fieldwork represents a significant career barrier for marine scientists who do not have access to large projects. As ships grow in size, sailing with free berths is becoming increasingly common yet represents a waste of opportunity, costs and carbon. The advertising of these berths usually occurs within small well connected groups, meaning that those without academic connections, typically historically excluded groups, are unaware of these opportunities.

FindAScienceBerth aims to open up marine science to all, particularly those who are currently underrepresented. Our tool will draw on up to date information on free berths internationally, and advertise these opportunities directly to those who would benefit the most. Our application process for applying to berths will be focused on equality, providing financial assistance for those who require it and ensuring that individuals are supported by supervisors and the ship’s scientific party.
