EDI

Equality, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) is at the heart of FindAScienceBerth. Our aim to increase opportunities for at sea fieldwork to those who have been traditionally excluded requires both active inclusion and monitoring of our performance towards increasing EDI in marine science.

Active inclusion:

Our approach towards creating a fair system for applicants regardless of background contains multiple steps. Firstly, we will promote FindAScienceBerth to marine scientists at a senior level in order to achieve high levels of participation (and therefore opportunities) and to educate on historical exclusion. Secondly in consultation with an EDI professional, we will design guidance on recruitment for science teams to reduce the impact of unconscious bias (e.g. by using anonymised applications).

EDI Monitoring:

Collecting EDI data from applicants will help us to determine whether the reach of our project matches our ambitions, we should expect applicants to be more diverse than the current marine science community. Additionally, monitoring of EDI between the applicant and participant stage will help us to identify how equitable our selection process is, we aim for participants to be of a similarly diverse background to applicants. Consultation with social science researchers will be conducted to ensure that the correct data will be collected in order to test the hypotheses we have set out.
